There Are More Dogs Than Kids for the First Time in History
How to profit?
Pet crematoriums!
Yes, all dogs go to heaven, but who's gonna help get them there?
I did a DEEP dive into this industry & was mind blown at the opportunity & margins here!Everything I learned:
• Cremation is on the rise, and not just for humans. By 2035 almost 80% of people will be cremated. Even more so with pets.
• 93% of pet owners that choose to cremate elect to get the ashes back and pay for additional products and services.
• As of 2023, 66% of U.S. households (86.9 million homes) own a pet. Covid accelerated this.
• 85% of dog owners and 76% of cat owners consider their pets to be a member of the family. I know I do!
• Pet cremation companies can't keep up with demand. I have been calling around and joining veterinary owner FB groups, and this is a universal problem.
• There's no big player in the market and according to @HCareAdvisorGuy (this was his idea) multiple PE contacts are wanting to get into the space but can’t
• There has never been a big private equity transaction in the space - too fragmented.
• Current owners in this industry are, you guessed it, boomers with old technology and little to no marketing.
• Gross margins: 90%• EBITDA margins: 40+%
What do you need to start?
• Refrigerated vans
• 6 figure incinerator
• Backup incinerator
• Drivers & an operator
• Connections with vets
• Refrigerators for the clinics (you provide)
• Industrial lease with zoning that allows for it
Unit Economics:
• It costs 17 cents of fuel costs per pound to cremate a dog, which can vary depending on lean muscle mass. Pitbulls are more expensive, whereas Beethoven not so much.
• Crematoriums charge $3.75 per pound!
Add-on up-charges include:
• Hand-delivery
• Memorialized paw print
• Laser-engraved box to store the ashes
• Convert the dog ashes to diamonds (only need 1/2 cup of ashes)
Added bonus? The creative LLC names you can choose are endless. My son suggested Bernadoodle, LLC.
So what am I doing with this info?
Obviously we are launching one!
Me, @HCareAdvisorGuy and @CoFoundersNik, with a rockstar, well-connected operator (not on X).
This operator spent years rolling up vet clinics in TX and OK and has a ton of connections, and already has 3 clinics/hospitals committed, with more in then pipeline.
If you're a vet, let's chat!
