Here Are Reasons Why You SHOULD & Should NOT live in Dallas-Ft. Worth - no BS
Should NOT:
- Insufferable, unrelenting, soul-destroying heat & humidity. Just write off a third of the year.
- 2 - 2.5% property taxes. You'll spend more in property taxes on an $800k home than the average homeowner spends on their entire monthly escrow!
- Almost nothing to do outside, aside from boating in lakes full of dead trees, reaching up at you like fingers from hell. Hiking? Heh. Mountains? LOL. Bike lanes? YOU WILL GET HIT.
- The crime isn't as low as you might think, in Dallas at least. Dallas has a higher murder rate than LA, NYC and Miami.
- Traffic. Is it the worst in the country? No. Is it bad? Yes.
- Tornadoes and hailstorms. Lots of hailstorms.
- Virtually no public transport. Sorry, DART, you're just not relevant.
- Air quality kinda sucks
- 7.5+ hour drive to a beach that doesn't have oil-colored sand & brown water. Kind of a bummer for a state with so much coastline.
SHOULD:
- $50 - $150 direct round trip flights to many cities (LAX, MCO, DEN, NYC, etc)
- More restaurants per capita than almost anywhere on Earth, many of them great.
- Still has affordable housing & a good cost of living.
- Tons of lakes for boating.
- 5-6 months of great weather.
- Better than Houston.
- Great school districts are easy to find.
- DFW airport is basically perfect. Super big, updated, parking is fine, and I never ever ever wait long in security lines.
- Unstoppable economic growth. Companies relocating their HQs here every week. Housing less vulnerable to bubbles than other hot markets. Great jobs, good economic policies to encourage more growth.
- 57 higher education options. TCU, SMU, UT-Dallas, UNT.
- Part of the beloved Texas triangle.
- 1 day ground shipping to a handful of major cities.
- Think tractors are sexy? Ft. Worth.
- $100M HS football stadiums your thing? Allen or McKinney.
- Wanna be neighbors with George Bush or Mark Cuban? Highland Park.
- Dual threat Chick Fil A + Chipotle combo on every corner? Literally every suburb here.
- Exurb land still relatively cheap. $25k/acre within an hour from Dallas.
- Lots of stuff for kids. Emphasis on sports, schooling and activities.
- Aside from cheap flights, you can fly direct basically anywhere. From Huntsville to Hong Kong. Dubai to Dublin. Sydney to Seoul. I haven't had a layover in years.
- More shopping than you'll ever need.
- Into the arts? We've got things, I hear. Perot Museum, Dallas Museum of Art, ask Google for more, probably.
- We have all the pro sports.
- No state income tax.
- Better than Houston.
All in all, WE live here because:
- awesome economy
- 10/10 school district
- lots of friends + church family
- traveling from here is super efficient.
Retirement for us will probably be somewhere where homes don't even HAVE to have AC.
